Our mission is to enable scalable, efficient, and fail-proof peptide manufacturing through automation and AI-driven design. We are a team of dedicated scientists and engineers working at the forefront of AI and biotechnology to redefine the landscape of peptide synthesis.

Position Summary

Amide Technologies is seeking an organized, proactive, and safety-conscious Laboratory Manager to oversee the daily operations of our 12,000-square-foot chemistry lab in Waltham, MA. This is a critical infrastructure role responsible for ensuring our scientists have the materials, equipment, and safe environment required to drive our research forward.

In addition to operational management, this individual will serve as the company’s Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO). You will be the primary authority on lab safety, responsible for the Chemical Hygiene Plan, regulatory compliance, and the lifecycle management of all chemical inventories from receipt to disposal.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations & Inventory Management

  • Purchasing & Procurement: Manage the end-to-end purchasing process for chemicals, consumables, and general lab supplies. Negotiate with vendors to ensure cost-effective procurement and timely delivery.

  • Shipping & Receiving: serve as the primary point of contact for all incoming and outbound shipments. Receive, inspect, and organize deliveries, ensuring packing slips are reconciled against purchase orders. Coordinate with the Quality Control team to arrange shipment of product to customers.

  • Inventory Control: Implement and maintain a robust inventory tracking system. Monitor stock levels of critical reagents and common consumables to prevent shortages.

  • Equipment Maintenance: Coordinate calibration, preventative maintenance, and repairs for laboratory instrumentation (e.g., HPLC, LC-MS, lyophilizers, nitrogen generators). Manage service contracts and vendor relationships.

  • Facility Organization: Ensure the 12,000 sq. ft. facility remains organized and functional. Optimize lab space utilization and coordinate with facilities management for building-related issues (HVAC, plumbing, electrical).

Chemical Hygiene & Safety (CHO Duties)

  • Safety Leadership: Serve as the designated Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), fostering a culture of safety across the organization.

  • Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP): Develop, implement, and annually update the company’s CHP in accordance with OSHA standards (29 CFR 1910.1450).

  • Chemical Storage & Segregation: Oversee the proper labeling, storage, and segregation of chemicals based on compatibility and hazard class. Maintain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) library.

  • Hazardous Waste Management: Manage the accumulation, labeling, and disposal of hazardous waste. Coordinate with waste disposal vendors and ensure compliance with EPA, RCRA, and local regulations.

  • Training & Compliance: Conduct new hire safety orientations and annual refresher training. Perform regular safety audits and inspections, documenting findings and implementing corrective actions.

  • Emergency Response: Lead the response to laboratory emergencies, including spills or exposures, and maintain emergency equipment (eyewash stations, spill kits, fire extinguishers). Drive the post-mortem process to ensure likelihood of recurrence is minimized through improvements in process, policy, and behavior.

Qualifications

  • Education: B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related scientific field.

  • Experience:

    • 3+ years of experience in laboratory management or operations within an industrial or biotech setting.

    • Demonstrated experience with chemical inventory management and purchasing systems.

    • Previous experience as a Chemical Hygiene Officer or significant involvement in EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) committees is strongly preferred.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of OSHA Laboratory Standard, RCRA waste regulations, and DOT shipping requirements.

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (required for receiving shipments and moving gas cylinders) and stand for extended periods.

Key Competencies

  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple logistical workstreams simultaneously.

  • Communication: Ability to enforce safety protocols with authority while maintaining a collaborative service-oriented attitude toward the research team.

  • Problem Solving: Practical, hands-on approach to troubleshooting equipment and logistical challenges.

The position is full time and the Laboratory Manager will be based at the company’s headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA. Flexibility regarding working hours is required. The Laboratory Manager will report to the Director of Lab Operations.
