Sublime Systems is developing a breakthrough process to make carbon-neutral cement. The technology replaces the industry's legacy fossil-fuel intensive thermal calciner process with an electrochemical process that produces carbon-neutral lime at ambient temperatures with renewable electricity. Sublime was started in 2020, as a spin-out of Yet-Ming Chiang's lab at MIT (Form Energy, A123, American Superconductor, 24M, Desktop Metals).

Syzygy Plasmonics is commercializing a radical new technology developed at Rice University. Our technology enables us to turn traditional catalysts into high efficiency photocatalysts. This conversion allows us to produce chemical reactors that are powered by light instead of burning fuel and operate at up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit lower temperature than conventional chemical reactors. Through this we can dramatically reduce the cost of chemicals produced while simultaneously reducing emissions associated with their production. Currently we are capable of performing multiple different chemical reactions and plan to enter the market with photocatalytic steam methane reforming to generate hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas made through our process will reduce costs for industry and also help enable the expansion of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market.
Via Separations offers a more modular and resource efficient separation solution enabled by novel membrane materials. By pioneering a new filtration membrane based on graphene oxide for fine liquid filtration in challenging environments, the material platform improves selectivity between key nanofiltration solutes and can operate with dramatically increased temperature stability, solvent resistance, and oxidizer tolerance. Physical separations have the potential to reduce the 15% of total US energy consumption used for evaporation and distillation-based separations by a factor of 10. Spun out of the Grossman Group at MIT, Via Separations is poised to be among the first to produce commercial graphene oxide-based products that will extend the boundaries of liquid filtration.
