About the company and team.
Apeiron Labs is a venture-backed startup based in Cambridge, MA. We are a data-as-a-service company that supplies customers with data from the upper 400m of the ocean, anywhere on the planet, on demand. We do this by building out a fleet of Tensor underwater gliders and a unique station-keeping and logistics system.
You will be joining a small, multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists with deep expertise in marine robotics, oceanography, and scalable software systems. Our team spans from bare-metal firmware on embedded processors to cloud systems that command vehicles and deliver data to customers.
About the role.
We are seeking a Software Engineer to own the full cloud layer of our Tensor platform: vehicle operations, command and control, and data delivery to customers. This is an individual contributor role with real ownership.
You will work directly alongside our firmware team and the engineers who bridge the vehicle and cloud layers, with no departments, no queues, and no committees between you and the work.
Our backend is Go running on DigitalOcean with PostgreSQL. Our vehicles communicate over the Iridium satellite network. The systems are real, the constraints are real, and the business logic is still being discovered as we scale from small fleets with dozens of vehicles to fleets of hundreds. You will own the architecture of our Ocean Operating System, and lead its implementation.
The right person for this role sees early-stage constraint as a challenge to make an outsize impact on the product.
What you will do.
You will shape how our Tensor underwater gliders are commanded, monitored, and how their data reaches the people who depend on it. Your work will directly enable our operators at sea and our customers onshore.
You will own decisions about how we build the systems that will run our next five hundred vehicles — and you will build them while keeping the current ones running.
What you should have.
- Proficiency in Go and PostgreSQL. Our stack is not aspirational — it is what we run in production. If you are proficient in another stack, be able to show that, and how you would transition to being effective with our systems.Required
- A demonstrated ability to design and build systems from first principles, without established requirements, a dedicated platform team, or a defined process to hand work off to.Required
- Comfort making architectural decisions before the business logic is fully settled. We are scaling from dozens of vehicles to hundreds, and the answers are being discovered through the work, not handed down at the start of a sprint.Required
- The ability to collaborate closely with firmware and embedded systems engineers. You do not need to write firmware, but you need to understand it well enough to design around it.Required
- High professional output. We measure success by what ships and how well it works, not by hours logged or processes followed.Required
- Proficiency in modern software development practices including version control, peer review, testing, documentation, and the responsible use of AI.Required
This position requires U.S. citizenship.
It’d be great if you also had these.
- Direct experience with marine robotics, underwater vehicles, or maritime systems, both on and offshore.Nice to have
- Familiarity with low-bandwidth, high-latency communication protocols such as Iridium satellite.Nice to have
- Experience with embedded firmware development or real-time operating systems. You will not write firmware in this role, but engineers who have will think about the cloud layer differently, and better.Nice to have
- Prior experience at an early-stage company where the team was the process, the product was still being defined, and your fingerprints are on how the system was built.Nice to have
