About Foray

Foray is dedicated to protecting and restoring natural ecosystems through biomanufacturing. Today, nearly 40% of plant species are threatened with extinction and conventional methods of plant sourcing exacerbate declines in acreage and biodiversity. Growing plant cells rather than whole plants, Foray’s plant cell culture platform reengineers access to critical plant products, offering harvest-free molecules, materials, and seeds. Foray extends plant cell culture to species and applications that are traditionally out of reach thanks to a platform powered by novel computational insights. Foray's no-harvest solution addresses the urgent need to combat biodiversity loss and ecological degradation, ensuring the continued availability of essential plant-based resources.

About the Role

We are seeking a Software Engineering Intern to join our team for a summer internship focused on building and enhancing computational tools that support our plant cell culture R&D efforts. This is a unique opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field who are passionate about applying their skills to solve real-world challenges in climate technology and biotechnology. The intern will gain hands-on experience in a mission-driven startup environment, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to develop and optimize software solutions that advance our research and impact.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain software tools that support plant cell culture research, including data visualization, data pipelines, and computational models.

  • Work with biologists, engineers, and data scientists to design software solutions that facilitate experiment tracking, analysis, and optimization.

  • Assist in building web-based interfaces and automation tools to improve workflows in lab operations.

  • Contribute to codebase improvements, debugging, and optimizing performance for in-house research tools.

  • Support the development of APIs, cloud-based applications, and data management systems to enhance research efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Strong foundation in web development fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).

  • Frontend development experience with modern web frameworks.

Skill & Attributes

  • Experience building and deploying full-stack web applications to a cloud platform (GCP experience is a plus).

  • Proficiency in a statically typed programming language (we use Dart and Go).

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Nice-to-have: A passion for data visualization and AI/ML integration.

  • Nice-to-have: Related coursework in database design/management.

  • Nice-to-have: Interest in biotechnology, plant science, or sustainability-driven applications.

  • Nice-to-have: Previous experience in a startup or fast-paced R&D environment.

Eligibility & Additional Details

This is a sponsored internship role and to be considered for this position, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. You must meet at least one of the following criteria: be a Massachusetts resident (with proof of residency required), attend an accredited college or university located in Massachusetts (with enrollment verification required), or attend a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), such as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

  2. Additionally, you must meet one of the following education requirements: be currently enrolled in a two-year community college or certificate program (or have completed one within the past year), be enrolled in a four-year college or university (or have graduated within the past year), or, if you are a graduate student, be enrolled in a Master’s program or have received your Master’s degree within the past year. Please note that doctoral students, candidates, and post-docs are not eligible for the Internship Challenge.
