Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are the premier desalination technology, trusted all around the world. Since 2014, researchers at MIT and around the world have been working on the ultimate RO process: batch RO. The thermodynamics says batch RO is the most energy-efficient desalination technology. Batch RO uses standard RO equipment, so it’s readily scalable. We’ve shown that it works, so now we’re taking it out of the lab and into the field. We aim to start by treating the harshest waters in the most remote locations. We will go where other RO processes cannot reliably perform. Initial applications include treatment of produced water and off-grid desalination. Eventually, we believe batch RO will reduce the cost of seawater RO by increasing plant productivity and reducing the size of seawater intakes and outfalls.
