Who we are at Osmo:

Osmo is a digital olfaction company, on a mission to give computers a sense of smell to improve the health and wellbeing of human life. Why? Our sense of smell both enriches and saves lives, and has a deep and direct connection to our emotions and memory. Vision and hearing have been digitized, but not scent. It’s time we solve this. We’re bringing an unprecedented combination of software, data, hardware and capital to the historic challenge of giving computers a sense of smell.

We believe in the power of automation and carefully applied AI/ML to solve problems that are beyond what the unaided human mind can tackle on its own. In the first phase of our development, we are using our map of odor along with cutting-edge generative AI to create the next generation of aroma molecules (e.g., the ingredients in the fragrances we wear and the products we use). Beyond fragrance machine olfaction has application across many industries, including manufacturing, military, medicine, and more. Working for Osmo means solving problems using digital olfaction for these customers. We're a hybrid company with a laboratory and center-of-mass in New York, NY and offices in Somerville, MA.

Osmo is seeking a Scientist I/II to join our expanding Analytical Chemistry team. You will play a crucial role in supporting all Osmo’s pipelines from AI and compound discovery to perfumery. You are a good communicator, detail oriented and a hands-on Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry expert in volatile compound analysis.

You will design and execute method development and validation for small volatile molecules. You will contribute to cutting edge research for digital olfaction and work closely with AI, Data Operations, Perfumery and Synthetic Chemistry teams.

What you will be doing:

  • Develop and validate GC/MS methods for both targeted and untargeted analyses including absolute quantitation, characterization of unknowns, identification of odor-active compounds and determination of off-notes

  • Support analytical chemistry for ingredients from discovery to go-to-market including support needed for regulatory filings

  • Sustain automated high throughput analytical data collection for machine learning

  • Be responsible for a well-maintained and highly functioning lab; troubleshoot and do simple repairs on instruments; train and supervise junior members

What we need to see:

  • Graduate degree in analytical chemistry, flavor/fragrance chemistry, food science, environmental sciences (PhD preferred) with 4-7y postdoc and/or industry experience in related fields

  • Hands-on experience with GC/MS is required; Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair GC/MS and robotics samplers

  • Demonstrated ability to isolate, separate and identify flavor and fragrance molecules at trace levels

  • Demonstrated expertise and strong knowledge of flavor and fragrance chemistry and relevant analytical tools

  • Ability to communicate with a variety of experts and translate their analytical needs into action plan for the team

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects concurrently

  • Ability to work on-site 5 days a week in NYC

Ways to stand out from the crowd:

  • Demonstrated ability to take existing and well established analytical methods and adapt them to unconventional applications

  • Have fundamental understanding of both, analytical chemistry applied to the characterization of volatile compounds and, of psychophysics concepts of odor perception; and ability to correlate chemical and sensory data using multivariate statistical analysis

Expected Salary: $130,000 - $154,000

If this role inspires you we’d encourage you to apply. We are committed to recruiting, developing, and retaining an incredible team optimized for a diversity of thought, background, and approaches. All employment decisions and responsibilities are determined based on current ability and your ability to grow, without regard to race, color, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, marital status, physical, mental, or sensory disability, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
