Osmo

Osmo

New York, NY, USA

Who we are at Osmo:

Osmo is a digital olfaction company, on a mission to give computers a sense of smell to improve the health and wellbeing of human life. Why? Our sense of smell both enriches and saves lives, and has a deep and direct connection to our emotions and memory. Vision and hearing have been digitized, but not scent. It’s time we solve this. We’re bringing an unprecedented combination of software, data, hardware and capital to the historic challenge of giving computers a sense of smell.

We believe in the power of automation and carefully applied AI/ML to solve problems that are beyond what the unaided human mind can tackle on its own. In the first phase of our development, we are using our map of odor along with cutting-edge generative AI to create the next generation of aroma molecules (e.g., the ingredients in the fragrances we wear and the products we use). Beyond fragrance machine olfaction has application across many industries, including manufacturing, military, medicine, and more. Working for Osmo means solving problems using digital olfaction for these customers. We're a hybrid company with a laboratory and center-of-mass in New York, NY and offices in Somerville, MA.

Osmo is seeking a Senior Scientist to join our expanding Synthetic Chemistry team. This individual will play a crucial role in supporting all Osmo’s pipelines working closely with AI, Data Operations, Perfumery and Analytical Chemistry teams and contributing to the cutting edge research for digital olfaction. The successful candidate is a good communicator, detail oriented, and has extensive chemistry experience with flavor and fragrance compounds and new fragrance discovery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and synthesize small molecules for new ingredient discovery and optimization.

  • Have a solid working understanding of relevant analytical techniques and in silico modeling.

  • Must be a team player with the ability to work well in a highly cross functional team environment to drive the translation of scientific research into marketable products.

  • Work closely with our software engineers, data scientists and AI researchers in support of internal models and new model development.

  • Must be able to work on multiple projects, thrive in a fast paced, data driven, environment and deliver on aggressive timelines.

  • Strong ability to articulate complex chemical concepts and results to a diverse audience, including non-chemists.

  • Contribute to scientific literature and represent the company at industry conferences, enhancing the organization's reputation in the fragrance community.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior scientists and technicians, fostering talent within the organization and promoting a culture of learning and innovation.

  • Must be willing to work on-site in our NYC lab.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: PhD in organic chemistry or related field with 4-7 years of relevant industry experience.

  • Experience:

    • Experience with volatile compound synthesis and purification, and an expert in troubleshooting complex chemical syntheses and resolving issues related to scalability and quality control.

    • A track record of success in the fragrance industry and new ingredient discovery including hit identification, hit to lead and lead optimization.

    • Deep understanding of the chemical properties and synthesis of fragrance molecules, including both natural and synthetic ingredients is preferred.

    • Parallel library design and synthesis, and an understanding of in-silico approaches are a plus.

    • Ability to develop new synthetic routes that are more efficient, cost-effective, or environmentally friendly.

  • Skills:

    • Strong organizational, problem solving, and communication skills.

    • Keeps abreast of emerging scientific trends and technologies that can be leveraged to advance fragrance chemistry.

    • Ability to work cross-functionally in a dynamic environment.
