Polyose Bio uses the power of synthetic biology to cheaply and sustainably transform food waste into high-value chemicals. On a global level, 40% of the food that is produced goes to waste. In the U.S. alone, that amounts to 100 million tons of food waste every year, which contributes 5% of the U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. The worst part is that a large portion of this food waste goes straight to landfills, where it decomposes and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. At Polyose Bio, we are completely redefining what it means to upcycle food waste. We use synthetic biology to enable a first-of-its-kind pairing between insects and highly engineered microbial cell factories to dramatically reduce the cost and environmental impact of food waste processing and upcycling.
